Westerly achieved something pretty special with the GK29, in creating a formidable-looking racing yacht that worked just as well as a fast family cruiser. I love the lines. She looks sleek, with the coach-roof flush with the deck, and you can see that she would be easy to work on deck. Yet surprisingly, headroom isn’t compromised in the saloon, and the living accommodation doesn’t seem cramped. I would say that this example has seen some service as a racer. This is borne out by the laminated sails filling the fore-peak, and the comprehensive running rigging upgrades, such as the 4:1 towed cars for tweaking powered-up racing jibs. The carbon fibre spinnaker pole also suggests that the skipper was in it to win it. Yet there has clearly been a lot of work going on below stairs. Instead of the usual single or pair of quarter berths, the area under the cockpit has been arranged to provide a double-berth athwart-ships. Both the galley and the nav station appear to have been re-built to a contemporary design. The galley’s fridge and oven both look fairly recent; certainly they’re not the originals. Many of the interior lockers have been re-built, with those in the galley closed by a rather clever roller-shutter system. The chart table is the biggest I’ve seen on a boat of this size. Though she needs a little tidying-up, there is a lot of potential here, either as a cruiser, a racer or both.
